Don't let the lifeline be cut

If you live in England, please email your local council and ask how they plan to ensure a lifeline is there for vulnerable people in crisis.

Local crisis funds are a vital lifeline for people who find themselves suddenly swept into difficulty. Yet across England, they have been neglected and removed.

In 2018, our Compassion In Crisis report uncovered the full extent of cuts across England. Dozens of local crisis funds have been scrapped altogether, and almost all have been drastically cut back.

These cuts have swept thousands of people further into poverty, or forced them to depend on food aid to survive. ‘Emma’, a mum of two teenagers in North East England, became trapped in poverty when her benefits were stopped without warning for eight months:

“When I was only getting child benefit support for the girls, I was told that did not constitute a crisis. The crisis support that is there is not working properly.”

It cannot be right that local authorities are free to close Local Welfare support entirely and to leave people adrift in times of greatest hardship.
